Princeton Joint Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee
Mission Statement
The purpose of the PJPBAC is to guide the development of a pedestrian and bicycle network throughout the community targeted towards all Princeton residents. The network will be designed so that residents have convenient pedestrian and bicycle access to key destinations including shops, schools, the public library, parks and playing fields. The network will be integrated where feasible into existing and planned municipal sidewalks, roadways and pathways.
Its Goals include:
- Sidewalk network. Identify gaps in the sidewalk network, and make recommendations to fill in the gaps with priority on developing safe access to destinations including:
- the Borough downtown
- all four elementary schools
- the middle and high schools
- the Shopping Center (Harrison Street)
- Community Park pool
- On-street bicycle network. Develop and propose a plan for an on-street bicycle network for transportation purposes targeted to users of intermediate skills (e.g. middle school-aged youth). Routes to the following destinations will be highest priority:
- the Borough downtown
- the middle and high schools
- the Shopping Center (Harrison Street)
- Community Park pool
- Recreational network. Develop and propose a plan for a recreational network (and/or recommend improvements to the existing network) of 8’ to 10’ multi-use paths to:
- parks/open space
- playing fields
- D&R Canal
- Adjacent communities, e.g. Hopewell.
N.B.: This network need not be exclusively located on multi-use paths but should ideally accommodate families traveling with elementary age children, that is, beginning users.
- Linked networks. Identify and propose links to the transportation and recreational networks for bicycles so that residents can conveniently access the networks from neighborhoods throughout the community, for example, Griggs Farm.
- Safe routes to school. This linked network of roads and multi-use trails should create many options for safe routes to school for middle school-aged kids riding alone or elementary school-aged kids mostly accompanied by parents.
- Safety. Promote and encourage respect for and safe use of sidewalks and bikeways.
- Rights and responsibilities. Promote community education on rights and responsibilities of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
Principles:
Look to build on or improve upon existing facilities wherever possible.
Work with municipalities to identify opportunities for adding pedestrian and bicycle facilities to anticipated capital projects.
Recommend use of cost-effective approaches.
Recommend only facilities that meet state and federal standards.
Recommend only facilities that the municipalities can maintain at a reasonable level.
Engage a broad cross-section of community members when developing recommendations and proposed plans.
