New Jersey and National Registers of Historical Places
Properties are eligible for listing because of an association with historic persons, events, architectural styles and building types, and archaeological and historical information.
The New Jersey Register protects historic properties from undertakings by state, county, and local governments that might have an adverse impact on their historical significance. It does not require owner approval.
The National Register protects historic properties from undertakings by public or private entities using federal funds that might have an adverse impact on their historical significance. It allows an individual owner and a majority of multiple owners to object to and prevent a listing.
It is possible that federal tax credits may be gained through the rehabilitation to historic structures if the property is income producing. This means it must be either a rental housing unit or commercial space. The property must be listed on the National Register (either individually or as part of a district) and the rehabilitation must be certified by the New Jersey Office of Historic Preservation.
